WARAKU Japanese Casual Dining has a wide range of Japanese cuisine. The star of the show for me was the assortment of tempura items, including nori, ebi and sweet potato. They were well battered and delightfully crispy. The taste of each item also shone through the thick batter.

Overall, WARAKU is a nice place to have some authentic, delicious Japanese cuisine by the picturesque Singapore River.

Agedashi Tofu - SGD4.80
For starter, it is a must-try to get Waraku's Agedashi Tofu. Soft on the inside and gooey on the outside, it has flakes on the top and I love the tofu soaked with the sauce.

Do eat it quickly because it becomes soggy after awhile.

Potato Mentai - SGD9.80
This potato mental has a really oily sheen and strong buttery taste. Waraku is really generous with their cheese, making sure every bit of potato is covered with delicious sticky cheese! The cheesy blend is definitely worth the calories... just walk up and down the Singapore River to shed off the fats.

We also ordered a bowl of Shoyu Ramen (SGD10.80).. it tasted great without any ingredients. There was a slight hint of soya bean, which isn't too surprising because most Japanese uses soya bean for their soup base. The ramen was really bouncy and I loved twirling it before chewing on the springy texture.

Katsu Curry Don - SGD10.80
The Katsu Curry Don was too heavy for any person. I wasn't used to the ultra thick Japanese curry sauce, and the Katsu was quite a small portion. The japanese rice on the other hand, was fluffy and moist! Do mix it well if you want an even taste, because the rice at the bottom tasted quite plain without curry. The chicken was really fresh and had a slightly pink texture.

How's their service?
Apart from friendly staff, I would have to confess that it may be rather slow when the restaurant was very crowded with business people. DO be patient with them and try to go early if you want to avoid waiting.

Recommended Tips for OpenRicers
1. If you go in the afternoon, the staff would put down the blinds. If you are sitting at the window seat and desire to watch the view outside, just simply ask them so!
2. It is very difficult to ask them to refill your cup of green tea, so just forget about getting that because it tasted quite diluted.
3. Do order some starter to accompany your main. Waraku does sell really delicious starter and appetisers !

Simply love the windows view by the side of Singapore River, however most of the seats have taken up. For walk in customers, there were no piority seats given. Thus, remember to do your homework before visiting if you want such a view.

The bowls were as big as what was in the displayed cabinets, perhaps as big as it could fill up one's face. It was filled with Ramen Noodles, roasted pork, seasoned bamboo shoots, vegetables with soya base ramen soup.

I like the presentation of the sukiyaki wazen especially when it was so appetizing. Love the thin sliced beef & tofu suki hot pot that comes with egg, mini udon, chawanushi, potato salad, white rice and pickles.

Consist of Uzura Bacon, Grilled quail eggs wrapped with bacon, the Aromatic Asparagus Bacon whereby grilled asparagus is wrapped with bacon too. All was good except the fried chicken wing which had too much of salt rubbed on. Weight conscious diners might want to give the pork belly stick a miss.

All in all, the ambiance was great just that service was a bite lacking. Regarding the dining space for table of 2, it was rather squeezy as well especially when we ordered quite a number of dishes. Having dined in both outlets (the one in East Coast), I would say both places have their hits and misses.

Tempura Tonkatsu Ramen - $16.80++
Ah, ramen. Waraku's tonkatsu ramen comes in a huge bowl, the size of a face basin. The gratification you get from just gorging at good ramen is awesome. While it is not the best, it can be considered better than average as it is not too salty and the soup base is flavoursome, rich - simmered with pork. Ramen noodles remain springy and firm while thoroughly cooked, plenty in quantity. About the quantity that two girls can eat. Not as generous with the egg though, with only half of an egg floating in the huge bowl. The tempura was quite a failure to me, too much flour batter and too little real prawn substance - had to physically remove the bulk of the flour batter before eating. The oil that was used to fry the tempura tasted reused and stale.

Sukiyaki Udon - $18.80++
The sukiyaki udon had a beef soup base which is not as thick but much more fragrant. Personally I would prefer this to the tonkatsu ramen as it is lighter on the palate. The udon noodles are very chewy and had bounce in each bite. Recommended dish if you are dining at Waraku!

Ichigo Milk - $6++
I'm always proven wrong whenever I try to venture into the unknown, especially when it comes to drinks. Ichigo refers to strawberry, and I am guessing it might be just be me but I don't like this combination. At least, to their credit, the strawberry taste is from the real fruit rather than syrup (which will taste like cough medicine). Go for the others, like the Azuki Milk.

One of the best parts about this restaurant is that it's located on the exterior bend of The Central... which allows you to overlook the beautiful stretch of Clarke Quay from Waraku too! For more photos and full review, please visit

I visit Waraku pretty often during Lunch time and they have pretty value for money lunch offers. Food wise, I would say it's value for money too. Sashimi is fresh, portions of the cooked food are generous too. Service wise is ok, the staff tend to get longer to get back to you during peak hours but it's acceptable. At least the waiting time for the food is pretty fast.

Another tastefully grilled squid that was soft on the inside yet slightly charred on the outside. Topped with a special teriyaki sauce that was surprisingly light yet flavoursome , every bite into the succulent squid was simply irresistible!

Decided to eat healthy for the day and so i chose the sashimi salad which was really good. Love that the salad had lots of sashimi in it. Sashimi was fresh and it included tuna and salmon fish. Fish roe was also added to the salad and the fresh greens were nice with the salad dressing(light japanese soya sauce ). Also had the hot pot to share which was great as the shabu shabu sauce made the pork more delicious and loved the fact of the amount of vegetables found inside the hot pot.

Went there to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I found the menu slightly different from the other mid-price ranged Japanese restaurants in Singapore. For one, I got to try this miso marinated fish which was being grilled on a special leaf…it was FANTASTIC! The taste was so unami and the flavour of the miso was strong. The udon portions are big and truly hit the spot especially if you’re hungry! Their dry cold soba was a hit with the group too!

Ordered this Katsu Curry Udon at Waraku today, for $15.90++. Prices have been adjusted up since the last time I was here.What I like about this curry udon is the huge portion of udon and pork cutlet. If you are searching for a place for nice japanese food, waraku may be the place u be looking for! A group of 3 of us came. I'm especially easily attracted by anything looking attractive and amazing. And this Waraku dessert successfully lured me in the restaurant. They have also variety of pasta that cater to different taste bud. However, it is not really the most delicious pasta. Beside that, they have thin crust pizza as well. The only sad thing is they have not much dessert to choose from.

Had a lovely window seat, with great view of the Singapore River. Menu is pretty extensive and we had a feast!! I had the Waraku Tsukemen ramen.The presentation of the ramen was pretty interesting. Ramen was served separate from the soup stock. The soup was bubbling hot when it arrived, the stone in the soup stock, which kept the soup base bubbling hot. Pork slice was tender and well-flavored. Egg was half-cooked, authentic Japanese ramen.

I rather fancy Waraku’s Japanese curry chicken cutlet, so much so that I would prefer this to Sushi Tei’s. The portion may look smaller, but they are actually the same. The curry is thick, a little sweet. The rice is soft but not fragrant, nothing much but a good mix with the curry. The chicken cutlet is really crispy! It was served hot and I love how the chicken is so thick.

I ordered No.37 which is really nice, it has scallop and potatoes in the spagetti and the sauce that they use is extremely nice!!! i think is a combination of the ebiko with something else, it's sweet and goes really well with the spagetti. There's also the butter mushroom side dish and the potato cheese, I prefer the butter mushroom though! And the price is just nice, except that the waitress took a long time before coming to bring us to our seats. But I would like to go there again!
