These steamed prawn dumplings are one of my 'must order' food when I visit this stall. The size of it is slightly bigger than the usual which you will get from other dim sum stalls. But I can tell you the dumpling skin is very thin, light and smooth. It is filled with generous amount of juicy crunchy fresh prawn meats which every bits of it are certainly so tasty and make you crave for more.

The food took a while to start arriving on our tables but it was faster than our previous experience. We were enjoying our dimsums when we heard a small commotion and my friend asked me to look at the kitchen/counter’s direction. By then, we together with other customers started to realise that a few MOM officers were here to catch illegal workers. They were busy talking to the lady boss and the other workers, checking their ICs etc. Most of the workers stopped their work and gathered.

Exciting experiences

This is a XO carrot cake. It look special right? And, you won't get drunk eating it. The XO taste makes the carrot cake more flavourful. I love this dish a lot. There is a lot of different dim sum there. And, it is all quite delicious. The prawn dumpling was quite huge and there is a whole prawn in it. The skin of the prawn dumpling is smooth too. Located in the clustered shops of Sunshine plaza, Victor's Kitchen is low on decor but high on taste. Like a typical HK style eatery, its serviced by efficient but no extra perks approach when it comes to service.

Another food highlight is their signature style carrot cake, that comes in a bowl and topped with delicious home-made gravy. A Must Try.

Avoid lunch time as the crowd and the waiting time is brutal during weekdays. Weekends are better, great if you are able to head down for an indulgent tea time.
Be prepared to squeeze as the tables and chairs are quite packed together but hey! sure makes for a cosy get together amongst friends.

Although there are many different types of chinese foods selling here, but my favourite here are only their dim sums, which includes the siew mai, char siew bun, deep fried meat rolls and spring rolls. The siew mai is filled with tender pork meat which are steamed till soft and juicy. The char siew are really fragrant and with some pork fats in it which even added that extra fragrant to it. The signature dish in Victor's Kitchen is the golden egg yolk lava bun. They tasted simply heavenly as the golden egg yolk ooze out from the bun. It melts in the mouth. It costs $4 for a basket of 3 buns. I ordered take away of 6 buns in total which costs $8. No discount for more orders.

At $4 per basket of custard pau, and with only three in one dimsum basket, it may seem steep. But after you ate one, you will realise you don’t mind forking out another $4 just to have another taste of the wonderful, flowing custard pau, or in Chinese, liu sap au. The filling is a combination of sweet and salty and it is really very good. Be careful not to waste the flowing custard. It is lucky that the custard flowed into my spoon instead of the plate, so I am able to easily lick my spoon clean

Do try it, and do go in multiples of three, so that you don’t snatch over the last remaining pau!

Visited Victor's kitchen for Dim sum lunch last Saturday. The restaurant has been listed on magazines and papers, i would say they are pretty famous for their dim sum. The most famous dish is definitely the Salty egg yolk bun. The dish is very sinful but definitely worth giving it a try. The price is rather steep for 3 buns, it costs me $4.

Best time to come is probably sunday evenings. =)

Ordered HK hot lemon tea ($2), Wala porridge, Steamed prawn and spinach dumpling, You Tiao Chee Cheong Fun, Steamed Carrot Cake with XO Sauce($4.50), Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun($4).
The You Tiao (Fried Dough) is still crispy but the Chee Cheong Fun is abit too thick.
Steamed Carrot Cake, a seldom seen item, but not the best I have tasted so far. Texture abit too soft.
Steamed prawn and spinach dumpling, taste wise not bad, but the skin looks abit thick.
Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun, very thick amount of fillings in the bun. One of the best I have so far.
The Wala porridge is looks like a cross between teochew and cantonese style. Not smooth and fine enough as grain could be seen.
The hot lemon tea is very thick but the tea taste abit bitter. Has it been keeping hot for sometimes?

Overall prices are abit in the high side as the average of the Dim Sum items are $4 ~ $4.50.

Victor's custard buns were probably one of the better ones that I've tried so far, with the custard milky, smooth and moist while the bun soft, fluffy and warm. The only thing that's lacking is the richness of the custard, which I did find a little lacking. Maybe I'm just picky.

Tasty Chicken (Hong Kong Style) - I didn't find this dish too fantastic as the taste of the rice wine was overwhelming and personally, I'm not really a fan of chicken cooked this way.

The Char Siew Cheong Fun was probably one of the weakest links in Victor's offerings. The skin was a little too thick and came across as rather starchy, unlike the silky smooth and translucent thin skins that good cheong funs should have. The char siew was rather normal as well, which kinda sealed the fate for this dish.

The Tasty Queen size Siew Mai wasn't really queen size per se. It was just slightly bigger than your average siew mai. What I liked about it was that the proportion of fatty meat to lean meat was relatively low, which didn't make me queasy after eating too much. But the skin was a tad too dry though

A hot favourite amongst customers, the prawns in the har gao were very fresh, albeit not too crunchy. The skin was nicely done, lightly stretchable and not too thick, but please eat it when its still hot.

Marginally smooth with a fair amount of bite best describes the Scallop, Sausage Carrot Cake. Sure it isn't exactly near the best that I've eaten, but for the price, no one's complaining. One gripe though, I couldn't taste or make out any traces of scallop or sausage in the carrot cake. Talk about misrepresentation.

Maybe its a norm to call it something as grand as phoenix porridge in Hong Kong, but in Singapore, we call it pi dan chow, or century egg porridge. Victor's rendition wasn't the least bit impressive, being average at best. The porridge tasted like normal slightly runny porridge with small pieces of century egg and prawn balls in it.

A filling dim sum brunch for 2 pax cost us in excess of $20, which is cheap for the above average quality dim sum that you get. Of course there are better ones out there, but don't forget that they cost a lot more too. Try this place out, but please don't get your expectations too high and you will enjoy it.

If you were a dim sum lover, you would know that hong kong is one of the best place to have dim sum. The people in Hong kong would even wake up in the early morning, just to have queue at famous dim sum place and have their dim sum there. And know i am going to share a good to dim sum place to you in Singapore. Heard that the boss of this restaurant is from Hong Kong, thus it definitely got its attraction point. My wife and I have major craving for Victor's dimsum all the time. but we feel that some of the dim sum is better that crystal jade and of course cheaper than crystal jade. I would not say it's dirt cheap nor very expensive. The drink is served chilled without ice in it; instead the ice is placed in a bowl to keep the drink chilled. It tasted pretty nice, though a little too sweet for me.

Yes, the prawn is fresh and big, yummy ~ but the skin's too chewy and hard, which we ended up scrapping off the skin ... This will be perfect if the skin's thin and good ~

This is a disappointment - the rice rolls might have been steamed for too long that they turned too soft ~ The shrimps are really 'shrink shrimps' ~

Beside the above, we have fried prawn dumpling and steam spare ribs with black bean sauce. Oh well, both turned to be disappointment as well.

Customers continuously enter the shop when we were eating and more swarmed in when we left, lol ~ Well, I think there are some gems hidden in it waiting for us to discover...
