We ordered laksa as we heard their laksa was very good. I got the $5 option it supposed to be the with the one that has the second most ingredients. However upon receiving our meal, the portion was relatively small and it didn't have much ingredients in there. It had minimal sliced fish cakes, fried tofu and shredded chicken. A little bit of sprouts and 2x half shrimp (one shrimp). The soup base was fragrant and the rice noodle had nice chewy texture. Overall it just wasn't filling enough.

I saw that all 3 dishes were priced at $3/ $4/ $6, where $6 would include a crayfish. Since I had queued for quite some time, might as well make the queuing worth and decided to go for $6. Unfortunately, the stall aunty told me that they had no more crayfish. So, I settled for $4.

Seemed like nobody else in front of me ordered Mee Rebus. When I finally made my order, the aunty asked me if I had tried the other 2 famous dishes, and encouraged me to since I've never tried them. The Mee Rebus was rather different from the usual Malay version (thick gravy). I preferred this version as it was easier to swallow with the diluted texture of its gravy. What was unique about this Mee Rebus was that there were 2 pieces of steamed chicken in it, and the aunty added some black sauce (chicken rice type) on them, and told me it would make the dish tastier. She was right - I should have added more black sauce to the WHOLE dish (I'm a black sauce fan!
). It'll probably enhance the whole dish and elevate its popularity to a higher level! I chose Noodles + Thin Beehoon for my dish as well, as the combined texture always complemented each other very well. First ever Mee Rebus I've eaten with 2 different types of noodles in it. There was another option of Thick Beehoon, but I never liked it).

I'd say this Mee Rebus is probably the best I've eaten, given my preference for its gravy texture. But if I visit again, I'd probably pay tribute to the 2 famous dishes (and see what the hype is really all about). By the way, the stall Uncle takes a while to cook each dish, hence the long waiting time. You must brace yourself for this!

The crayfish though small, were fresh, meat were easily pulled up with my chopsticks.

Since they are also famous for the innovative fresh fruit juice Mee Siam, I guess I wont just stop by for the similar dish the next round!
Those who are visiting during the peak, do be prepared to wait as there are only one man preparing the food and a lady taking the order. It took me about 25 minutes for my bowl of lunch. Good Luck!

Daniel, the owner of Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa, mentioned that he was the one who came out with the innovative idea of adding fruit juice into the mee siam.

As I couldn't really take spicy food, I scooped up the dollop of chilli paste before I started eating. The first mouthful of mee siam was really awesome, it was refreshing and spicy at the same time. Full of the flavours of the variety of seafood that was probably prepared together with the broth.

I was there with a group of foodies, and we decided to order the large bowl with crayfish, which cost only $6.00. I think it's really worth the price. It came with bits of chicken, fresh prawns (de-shelled), and of course the crayfish. What was seriously missing from the bowl are cockles!

Something about fruit juice mee siam that was obviously different from an ordinary bowl of mee siam is that it taste sweeter, less savoury and lacks the cloyingly rich taste of shrimp paste (which some people might prefer that instead of the fruit juice version)

I'm torn between choosing the fruit juice version or the ordinary bowl of mee siam to be honest, but I'd definitely return when I have the craving for an innovative twist in my mee siam.

First and foremost, the taste, and everyone knows that the soup is the most important ingredient in any mee siam. There was a slight tangy feel that pops up the first moment you place the food in your mouth. A few of us suspected the "culprit" to be pineapple. This was definitely refreshing start since it brought about a tinge of sweetness yet acidic feel on top of the usual savoury mee siam taste. However, I stand neutral for having it because it's gonna be a love and hate situation. Because you are either gonna love it, or hate having pineapple flavour in your mee siam.

What was included in their supposed highlight dish was shredded chicken, prawns and a piece of crayfish on top of what you will regularly get in any standard mee siam. The prawn and crayfish were surprisingly rather fresh, big kudos to the owner.
However, the only down side was that the chicken wasn't.

Situated in Hong Lim Food Centre, you would have guessed that the place was really packed on the day we visited it. So do note to patronise during off peak hours or you might need to wait for a seat. In addition, at $6, you get all the regular works + the crayfish (for the additional $2). I used to think that this is pricey for hawker food but well, inflation has caught up pretty fast.

Rounding it up, the novelty and overall experience of having fruit juice in your mee siam is something that's worth trying but to be honest, not a must. It's definitely not something I will take the effort to tell all my friends about, but something that I will recollect if the conversations lead to interesting food that we've tried.

The stall Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa is located on the second floor of Hong Lim Market & Food Centre. There are quite a few Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa stall around the island which I think are franchised. The original stall is at Jalan Besar and it is still using charcoal to cook its laksa broth. The owner of this stall, Mr Daniel Soo has been running this stall for the past 12 years and invented the special Fruit Juice Mee Siam.

The one dish meal Fruit Juice Mee Siam are priced at $3, $4 and $6. The $6 one comes with crayfish. In my bowl of mee siam, there were luxurious servicing of crayfish, chicken, prawn and eggs. I was totally blown off by the stall's interpretation of the spicy, sweet and sour mee siam gravy. The gravy comes with a lighter colour, smoother texture and it is less oily compared to the Malay and Nonya versions. In short it seems like a more healthy version but not compromising in taste. In fact better than the traditional mee siam.

Before leaving, I tried my luck to check with the uncle what fruits were added to gravy but he refuses to tell me the ingredients. He only tells me a lot of work is needed to prepare the gravy and it needs to be boiled by a good 2 hours. I suspect pineapple and lime were added. If you have the chance to visit the food centre, do check out their fruit juice mee siam. It is really good.

What sets this Mee Siam apart from others is the secret blend, of several fruit juices that yields a light and refreshing taste. The commixture of fruit juices imparts a familiar tangy flavour that we associate Mee Siam with, but without the heaviness, oiliness and cloyingness of the accustomed version. There’s also a subtle sweetness coming through the tangy notes, which I suspect comes pineapple juice. I couldn’t discern the other ingredients he’d added, but the grittiness commonly encountered in Mee Siam (from the addition of shrimp paste) is not present.

Hawker foods are generally high in calories. A regular serving of Mee Siam consists of an average of 700 calories. For those who seek a healthier alternative, this Fruit Juice Mee Siam is more forgiving on the waistline –same amount of satisfaction, but lesser the guilt. I actually enjoyed this version more than the conventional version of Mee Siam.

A bowl of Fruit Juice Mee Siam costs $3 to $4. For a slightly more lavish option, you can order the $6 portion that comes with poached crayfish. The succulent flesh comes off the shell easily –evidence of its freshness.

This is the star of the day - Fruit Juice Mee Siam with Crayfish, $6
(Mine kindly sponsored by OpenRice)

There are also $3 and $4 options but these are without crayfish. I'd say these are still good options considering that, as you can see, they also serve several slices of chicken, a few prawns, one whole egg and a handful of bean sprouts in the dish, so you'll never run out of ingredients with every bite of the noodles. Otherwise, why not top up just an additional $2 - $3 for an extra whole crayfish?! This deal is too good to be missed; I'm not sure you can get a whole crayfish elsewhere for this price.

The creative element in this dish is none other than the use of fruit juice. The few of us at the table speculated that the secret fruit juice ingredient could be pineapple. But whatever the secret ingredient was, the owner obviously succeeded in re-creating this new mee siam recipe. The soup is light, very smooth and has almost no traces of oil. It also has this slight natural sweetness, and yes, sour at the same time, tastes authentic just like mee siam, in fact everything like what a good mee siam should be. I suppose this should be the healthiest recipe to an awesome bowl of mee siam, topped with a generous amount of ingredients.

This mee siam really won hands down as compared to other mee siams I've eaten at various coffeeshops, hawker centres or cafes, which usually charge at least $3+ for a bowl of oily mee siam with only a few tiny bits of tau pok and an egg.

So many goodness in this meal, so what are you waiting for?

Although my meal was sponsored this time round, I'll be sure to return to this stall as a willing paying customer.

The star of today meal : Fruit Juice Crayfish Mee Siam (usual : $6).
Unlike the usual version of mee siam, the version here has a more light and tangy taste. So tangy that you do not have to squeeze the lime served with the dish. Therefore I suspect that lime juice has used in the making of the gravy and thus the name "Fruit Juice Mee Siam". The crayfish and the prawns accompanying the dish, taste fresh and juicy, as well as, the tender chicken too.

This laksa is really different from others, it doesn't have that sinful coconut milk feel to it when you slurp the gravy, but I'm totally fine with that. The taste has a dimension of its own, it's like someone mixed curry with meesiam gravy and cooked it with laksa leaves. That would be a very poor representation of how the taste is and you should try it for yourself to find out. The bowl of $3 gives you a substantial amount of noodles with fishcake, prawns and cockles (i love cockles so cockles are always a must in my laksa!!). The soup is really good, down to the last drop and really -no regrets on the calories here. The laksa leaves can also be tasted in the soup, and it has a good balance of spice and lemak-ness to give this refreshing kick to the dish -perfect!! I could drink the plain gravy on its own and have it with rice!!

The uncle is also very pleasant and friendly, despite the heat of the day and stuffiness of the hawker centre...Definitely will come back for more!

The taste of laksa from this stall seems different from the other laksa I had tried before. The gravy light seems soupy than thick. The ingredients used were very generous slices of fish cakes, prawns, tau pok, bean sprout, cockles and huge chunks of chickens. I do admit that even though I'm not a mee siam fan, this was very well done. The gravy is obviously the winning ingredient, but they won't reveal their secrets so no one knows what's exactly in the fruit juice gravy (yes, it's called Fruit Juice Mee Siam). I suspect it's pineapple and lime though. I'll never really know.

I also ordered the laksa to share. Over here, you have to use a spoon to scoop up the laksa noodles and gravy. Sooooo satisfying - laksa gravy's not too thick, consistency was just right, and they were very generous with the ingredients Two thumbs up!
