The hokke fish was tender & fresh. A little letdown as the skin was over grilled till it taste a bit bitter. Be careful of bones too.

I personally don't fancy miso soup but the one that serves here is good. The taste of miso is not too strong and they added carrots & radish with traces of meat too.

I like to have lunch at Ootoya. It serves very authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine. Today I ordered Katsu Don - Pork Cutlet Rice with egg. The pork cutlet is thick and the portion is big. Second Stop: Grilled Fish Set

Price: $15+

Taste: Was about the same quality as compared to other Japanese restaurants. Didn't have any outstanding points, other than the soft wintermelon wedges and pickled wintermelon. Have them between bites of fish for a quick palate cleanse. Didn't fancy the kelp slices.

Third Stop: Chicken Rice Bowl (Didn't remember the original name OH WELL)

Price: $18+

Taste: Really Crispy Chicken! If I had a clip mic I will demo the sound of biting into this juicy poultry. It wasn't salty and just oily enough for my liking. It was rather light though but adding the special sauce heightened the flavor of the dish! That salty and tangy sensation just blew me away.

CHICKEN CLOSE UP!

★Overall

[+] Plus Points

● Most dishes are well above the standards of any other jap restaurants you see elsewhere, with a affordable price!

● Set meals comes with FREE BOWLS OF RICE AND MISO SOUP.
Choose between:
1) Normal fluffy white rice
2) Seaweed Rice *Recommended by me
3) MultiGrain Rice (Yummy but abit too glutinous for my liking)

【IMPROVEMENTS】

○ Miso soup is way tooo saltyyyy. (Ugh ugh, the generous amount of pork slices, carrots, wintermelon & tau pok won't bribe me)

○ Service.
*The grilled fish set was initially ordered wrongly; it was intended to be the set with the whole fish. (But kudos to the calm lady who changed the bill to accommodate the altered set
)

*Time management

But most importantly enjoyed my meal here!

Belly Shio Koji ($23.50++)
The pork belly was very nicely marinated and grilled. It was tender and chewy but I found it a tad too oily. The set also comes with rice (we chose the mixed grain variety), miso soup, some preserved vegetables and chawanmushi.

I heard good reviews of Ootoya and chose to try the Torotoro set which is like scallop steamed in a steamer on top of rice with some thick soup. I didn't like this much. Firstly the scallop and rice didn't have much taste and the soup feels quite starchy and gelatinous. The soup is super salty so I'm not sure if we are meant to mix the rice and the soup together. Ootoya is one of the few Japanese restaurants I would definitely order rice at. Their unique selling point is the different types of rice you can choose from like Hijiki Seaweed Rice. The rice was more on the bland side and the main star of the dish were the clams. It seems that they steamed the clams together with the rice which helps the nice seafood flavour of the clams to penetrate every single grain of rice. The set also comes with Chawanmushi and the portion was more than enough for a satisfying dinner.

As my green tea is refillable, i find that the staff are very polite and attentive to customer's needs.

Ambience
Japanese decor and furnishing. I'm quite amazed that the flooring is actually cemented.
The back kitchen is somehow opened.

Price
Reasonably priced. Good value for money!

Recommendation / Tips
(1) They do offer take away
(2) They have long tables suitable for gathering
(3) Rice and soup is refillable if you order set

There are 2 common choices for the main course :
1. Alacarte
2. Set

For the set meal includes rice
, miso soup and main dish.
Meanwhile, for the rice, cabbage vege, and soup are all FREE to refill.
So you can eat as much as you can, until you looks like a pregnant! HAHA

Of course, the set's cost will be slightly higher which is (alacarte price) + $3 to $5.

For examples of what we had ordered.

The fish come with salty taste. It is just nice for me

Most important is the fish is fresh enough. I like it!
And I like the fish because it is less small bones and the bones is obviously see just half of the fish body which they already cut before they are being serve.
Mean we will only eat the half body of the fish for a meal.

Before end, we ordered the 1 for 1 desserts as mentioned above

1. Warabimochi which is jelly balls(mochi) with sweet soybean flour. ($7.00)

2. Kokuto Pafe which is egg castella cake parfait with brown sugar and whipped cream. ($7.00)
There is raspberry and bean on top and banana in the middle of the cream.

While for drinks:
Green tea is the best choice for me when I having Japanese meals.
The green tea here is $1.00 for 1 cup if not mistaken and it can be refill for FREE!

Overall, I am satisfy with the meal

Good service! Tidy table

I could suggest that if the floor of the restaurant could upgrade may look more better for the overall scene.

Natto is a kind of fermented soy beans that you will find exclusively in Japanese restaurant, or supermarket. I never tried one before, so I just ordered one during my visit to Ootoya Japanese restaurant. The price is reasonable ($3.50), and the dish is presented in such a nice way that it looks appetizing. However, I find the taste very strong, the kind of turned-bad taste, and I reckon one would have very acquired taste to like it.
